Ways to check Heat exhaustion to have Healthy Summer
Summertime means longer days, sunshine, picnics, barbecues, and kids out of school. Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle no matter the season.
However, as the heat index in several parts of the Philippines may hit 40°C and above according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), it is important to take some precautionary measures so you don’t get overheated.
The warm weather may cause heat exhaustion. It does not usually need emergency medical help if you can cool down within 30 minutes.
Check for signs of heat exhaustion which may include:
- Tiredness
- Dizziness
- Headache
- feeling sick or being sick
- excessive sweating and skin becoming pale and clammy or getting a heat rash
- cramps in the arms, legs, and stomach
- fast breathing or heartbeat
- a high temperature
- being very thirsty
- weakness
The symptoms of heat exhaustion are often the same in adults and children, although children may become irritable too.
If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion they need to be cooled down and given fluids.
Follow these 4 steps if someone is experiencing heat exhaustion:
- Move them to a cool place.
- Remove all unnecessary clothing like a jacket or socks.
- Get them to drink a sports or rehydration drink, or cool water.
- Cool their skin – spray or sponge them with cool water and fan them. Cold packs, wrapped in a cloth and put under the armpits or on the neck are good too.
- Stay with them until they’re better.
Finally, to maintain a healthy summer make sure to:
- Eat right and stay healthy. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy an outdoor meal with friends and family. Refreshing salads, melons, and berries add color and flavor to picnics and cookouts.
- Stay safe in the sun. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and manmade sources like tanning booths. Protect your skin from the sun when you go outside, especially during the long, warm summer days. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Put more on at least every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.
- Protect yourself from the inside by taking food supplements.
